Making Money Now


Values, Value and Valuation — The money is all relative


Oh how timing sometimes works out to be funny. I was driving home tonight and started thinking about the value of products, the valuation of companies and how the values that a company portrays can change the rest. No sooner had I sat down to write this piece than the news of Goldman Sachs investing $500 million into Facebook broke and refreshed the entire thing in my mind. So let’s look at these three things, and try to see if one manages to sway the rest.


Values


Do you, like me, find yourself more inclined to use or purchase something that comes from a company that you can believe in? The ethos of a company can — for me at least — completely break me away from the product. That very fact, because I feel that I’m likely not alone in my actions (or lack thereof) can have a serious impact on the bottom line of a company.


Look at Facebook, for instance. When the Social Graph was announced and the new privacy changes went into effect, many people threw up their hands in disgust. But many others continued with life as usual, even if a bit annoyed. Why? Because Facebook has this outward appearance of a company that’s simply trying to do cool things, and it needs information in order to do them. The company’s values seem, for the most part, to be in line with the things that we Internet users want. As such, there was a lot more wagging and a lot less barking from the angry dogs crowd.


You’re starting a company? There’s likely something to be said for developing an ethos ahead of time, making it known and then sticking to it. Would Google be where it is today if not for the “don’t be evil” tag line? Even if you don’t fully believe that the company runs that way, you still remember it. Point made.


Value

That quote is one that has stuck with me for some time now. A few years ago I was making my living selling cars and it is sometimes exceedingly difficult to overcome the objection of price. In the technology world, we’re constantly being offered products for “free”. The only cost? A bit of information, a slice of our privacy or somethings similar. But then, after using those “free” products, we start to build our own value for them.


Don’t believe me? Just look at some of the things that you likely use every day. Gmail? You’d pay for that. Twitter? You don’t want to admit it, but it’s likely become a valuable asset to your daily Internet life. The same can be said for so many things and yet we get them for “free”. But there’s a down side to this issue as well — it becomes very difficult for a maker to charge for a product when there are free alternatives. Don’t believe that? When was the last time that a box office movie didn’t get a torrent version?


And yet, even as companies try to build value in their products, still others think that the economy allows for them to set their own values and tell us what something is worth. TV networks are probably the most well-known perpetrators of this heresy. Apple TV launched, ABC and Fox decided to jump on board and see what would happen. Some of the rest? They decided that $.99 was devaluing the product and yet as the provider of the product, there is no one entity that is more unqualified to name the value.


Consider it a lesson in business, I suppose. The potential buyer will determine the value of your product. Always.


Valuation


Now here’s a sticky one. Valuation is one of those strange things because it means so many different things to different people. To the potential investors, it’s a measure of how much money can be made. To the business owner it’s a gauge of how well the business has done. To the end user? It’s…honestly not much.


As a case in point, around TNW we love Twitter. We want to see it succeed and we are sure that it will. The valuation continues to climb prior to any IPO and yet, as users of the service, it really doesn’t matter much to us. Sure, it would matter if the site closed its doors, but beyond that there simply isn’t anything about the valuation number that matters.


And so, as an entrepreneur you have to ask yourself where the balance lies. Do your company values allow you to build value in your product? If so, then the chances are that your valuation will end up right where it needs to be. There’s a fair amount of truth in the thought that, if you handle the small stuff, the big stuff will fall into place.


So with that, I offer you a thought going into the new year — start with your values. The rest will fall into place.

We're talking about a company with enough money in the bank to make a Goldman Sachs-sized investment in Facebook if it wanted to, more than triple the amount Dell had in the bank at the end of the last quarter, plus more than five times the amount HP had too, while we're at it.


Let's look at a number for a minute: Apple has 51 billion dollars in cash. That's 51,000,000,000 bucks. Or, approximately the amount of money it takes to fill a vault-slash-swimming-pool. Who has that kind of money these days and didn't get it via government bailout? Apple, that's who. What is its secret? It made that money the old-fashioned way, by selling new-fashioned things.


In a time when few companies are profitable and everyone's excited about a flat line since it isn't a downward curve, Apple is making money iHand over iFist. One could presume from this that analysts and others who watch CNBC professionally would be excited about a company with growth and profitability in the current climate. However, that's not the case.


Remember when Apple wasn't doing well? Those bygone days when people may have actually believed the name of the company was "Beleaguered Apple Computer?" Well, once Uncle Steve made his return in 1996, that started to turn around. Apple Computer started making things that start with "i," and in 2001 with the launch of the iPod, Apple was officially cool again. You know, unless you were an analyst on Wall Street, in which case Apple wasn't cool, it was just less lame than before. But seriously, have you seen what sort of stock prices Dell and HP have these days? Now those are tech companies.


I call shenanigans! Now, instead of being impressed with profitability, the question is "Oh sure, you're all profitable, but can you stay that way?" Apple hasn't proven that yet? Explain to me how making ANY money in a time of unprecedented financial volatility is something that gets played down. What will it take before Apple gets a fair shake? A brand new device that sells a million units in three months? Try two and a half. A new version of the same thing released a year later, how long did that take to sell a million? Three days.


Find and replace "Apple" with a non-tech company in some of these articles and see if it still makes as much sense. Just the iPhone product line by itself is bigger than Coca-Cola, but Apple still gets dismissed like this?


Someone needs to have a little heart-to-heart talk with some of these guys. Apparently they've all had their heads down in their BlackBerrys for so long that they don't realize it's cool these days to carry around something Designed In Cupertino. Clearly a lot of other people have figured it out -- what's stopping Wall Street from seeing the light?

Do you, like me, find yourself more inclined to use or purchase something that comes from a company that you can believe in? But many others continued with life as usual, even if a bit annoyed. Why? The company’s values seem, for the most part, to be in line with the things that we Internet users want. As such, there was a lot more wagging and a lot less barking from the angry dogs crowd.

And yet, even as companies try to build value in their products, still others think that the economy allows for them to set their own values and tell us what something is worth. TV networks are probably the most well-known perpetrators of this heresy. Apple TV launched, ABC and Fox decided to jump on board and see what would happen. Some of the rest? They decided that $.99 was devaluing the product and yet as the provider of the product, there is no one entity that is more unqualified to name the value.


Consider it a lesson in business, I suppose. The potential buyer will determine the value of your product. Always.

Do you like working outside? Do you need a little extra income? Trees are your answer. For a small investment of time and money you can make as much as you want to make by buying and potting bareroot trees and shrubs. You are probably saying that you don't want to take the time to grow a tree, but you don;t have to grow the trees. All you have to do is to pot them. When they show their first leaves, they sell.

Bareroot trees and shrubs are widely available and reasonably inexpensive. If you have ever gone to WalMart in the spring, you have seen fruit trees for 17-20 dollars each. These trees, on average cost 3-4 dollars each bareroot and have only been in the pots that they are in for a matter of weeks. The producers that sell them to Walmart and the other chain stores get them from the same sources that I am going to recommend in this article. They make thousands with their trees and you can too.

THE FIRST STEP

To trade in trees you will need several things. You'll need containers. These can be obtained from wholesale nursery suppliers or you can call local landscapers and buy their used pots at a better price. A three gallon pot, which is commonly used to pot a 6-8 foot tree costs an average of 55 cents new or 29 cents used.

You will need a soil/bark mix. You can buy bark mix, which is sand and finely ground bark from just about any landscaper, or sawmill. They usually sell it by the yard and it costs between 15 and 20 dollars a cubic yard. Five yards will plant over a hundred trees in three gallon pots. Many of the bareroot shrubs like althea,crepe myrtles, mock orange and weigelia can be potted and sold in 1 or 2 gallon pots. Bareroot raspberries, blueberries and blackberries can be sold in 1 gallon pots

You will need fertilizer. A good choice is sta-green nursery special. It costs around $22.00 per bag and one bag will fertilize hundreds of trees.

After you have found your sources for your soil mix and containers it is time to shop for the trees. I use North Alabama Nursery in Joplin Alabama for fruit trees and berries. I use B&B Nursery in McMinville , Tennessee for ornamental trees and shrubs. North Alabama Nursery has the prettiest bareroot fruit trees in the industry and they almost always give you more size than you paid for. B&B has a large variety of ornamental trees like red maples, bradford pears and flowering cherries at extremely reasonable prices. Many very popular varieties of trees and shrubs start at a cost of less than a dollar each.

Your next step is to decide how many trees you think you can sell and what you will sell them for. On average you can triple your cost and still be cheaper than Walmart or one of the big chain stores. Remember that most bareroot wholesalers require that you buy the trees in bundles of ten. When you have decided what the best varieties for your area are, order your trees.

The nurseries that I have named don't dig the trees until they are ordered, so you can expect the shipping to take 1-2 weeks depending on the size of your order.
When you get the trees and shrubs, they will come either in bundles wrapped in plastic and burlap, or in boxes insulated with plastic and burlap. The reason for this is that the tree roots are exposed and they need to be kept moist until planted. Remember when you price your trees to include the cost of frieght in your calculations.

After your trees arrive, they should be potted as soon as possible. If you cannot plant them immediately, be sure to kep the roots moist. You can do this in several ways. You can bank them which means that you lay them down on the soil pile and cover the roots with a light 3-4" layer of soil. When you do this be sure to moisten the soil covering the roots and keep it moist until you have a chance to pot them. You can also keep them in the original packaging and keep the burlap moist until you have the time to pot them. Either way, do not allow the roots to dry out before potting.

Now it's time to pot your trees.

Most people, when they see a bareroot tree, are shocked. Most of the trees have been root pruned for shipment and they have two or three root leaders at the base of the tree. They think "this will never grow" but they do and you'll be surprised at how quickly they will produce leaves after you have potted them.

The best and easiest way to pot a bareroot tree is to "pot around" it. We generally take the tree and stick the root mass into the pot when it is still empty. We hold the tree at the height in the pot that we want it to be and fill around it. As we fill we bounce the pot several times to make sure that the soil surrounds the roots thoroughly and that there are no air pockets. This method is best for bigger trees and plants that have large roots. On occasion, you'll have to trim the roots to fit the pot. This usually happens with apple and pear trees and as long as you leave 5-6 inches of root you should have no problems with the trees. After the trees are in the pots, water them thoroughly and you're done.

Remember that unless it is very hot outside, the trees won't need a lot of water. Watch your pots and water thoroughly before the pots dry out. After several days, you'll notice that many of your trees and shrubs have begun to produce leaves and flowers. All they were doing was waiting for you to pot them.
