Perfect Market Inc, a start-up that seeks to help news organizations make more money through online advertising, has won $9 million in new funding in a round led by Comcast Interactive Capital, the cable giant's venture arm.

This is the fourth capital infusion for the Pasadena company since it was seeded with $1 million by Pasadena start-up incubator Idealab in May 2007. Perfect Market has now raised $28.1 million from a variety of sources, including venture companies Trinity Ventures and Rustic Canyon Partners. In 2010, the Los Angeles Times' parent company, Tribune Co., led a $6-million investment round.

“The substantial support we’ve received from investors to date affirms Perfect Market’s mission," said Perfect Market Chief Executive Julie Schoenfeld in a statement. The company, she said, was looking to "satisfy a gap in finding new monetization opportunities for leading Web properties in the ever-expanding online advertising marketplace.”

Counting among its clients 30 national news sites -- including latimes.com -- Perfect Market evaluates the often voluminous archives of large news organizations to determine which pieces of its older content might be most profitably brought to the surface -- and paired with ads. The company works with Hearst Corp., the Orange County Register and an NBC-owned site, among others.

Making Money With Website

"I've never made out with him," Lauren Leto told me last week, between puffs of a Parliament Light. The 24-year old brunette, rocking a little black dress and flat boots, was debunking my suspicions that she might be romancing her notoriously cute business partner, Patrick Moberg, the talented artist perhaps best known for making the website NewYorkGirlofMyDreams.com in 2008.

Leto and Moberg recently launched the well-funded start-up BNTER, a site that stores the best conversations between users and their friends. BNTER comes on the heels of Leto's big Internet hit, TextsFromLastNight.com, the website that earned her two book contracts, a TV deal, and, reportedly, lots of money. But back to girl talk: "It's the same with [Texts co-founder] Ben [Bator]," she explained. "I picked such attractive co-founders, people assume we must all be dating. But, no, no, no. We're co-employees! And the thing people don't understand is that when you're, like, writing checks with someone — when money is involved — you become so sexually unattractive to that person." She exhaled. "This is why I can never get married."

Leto was smoking outside an East Village apartment playing host to the Silicon Alley version of a singles mixer — a meet-up for users of HowAboutWe.com, the dating website Brian Schechter co-founded on Valentine's Day in 2010. Users suggest date ideas or contact people whose ideas they like. "How about we go to an underground supper club?" was among the site's most popular date ideas during its first year, so Andy and Ashley — a couple who met on How About We — decided to throw the soiree, and Apt. No. 4, a traveling group of foodie friends, worked the kitchen, supplying lobster bisque and teriyaki char and drinks. Leto was a featured single on How About We this month: She answered every question with a quote from the Kelis song "Bossy"; she said she was at the party to support Schechter and not necessarily to find a man.

Nick Gray, the quick-witted Williamsburg party boy, would have it otherwise, though. "Lauren and I haven't dated yet, but I'm trying," he told us. When Leto offered no reply, Gray joked, "Awkward ..."

How About We's Schechter, meanwhile, admitted that online dating might always carry a stigma: "People say [the stigma's] decreasing, and soon there won't be any," he told us. "But when you go onto an online dating site, in some way you're confessing, 'I don't have what I want,' which is not necessarily an attractive thing. People tend to find someone attractive who has what they want. So I wonder if it's actually a psychological or cultural or almost biological thing: 'I want the one who doesn't need.'" He added: "I do think it will become increasingly normal. It's efficient. And a site that's about having fun and not confessing, necessarily, that you don't have something you want, is more likely to attract people. You're just saying, 'I want to try new restaurants!' Etcetera." Schechter has a girlfriend who he didn't meet over the Internet, but he said he still gets several e-mails a day with the subject line "How about we ...?"

Gray is one fan of the site who hasn't had much success on it yet: "I think my date ideas are intimidating to some people," he told us. "I used to think that I was a real catch, and now I've only had three people who wanted to go on my dates. Some people write, 'How about we get high and eat pizza?' and they get, like, one hundred people interested. And I write, 'Let's go to Rio for New Year's Eve!' Or, 'Let's go to Greece and open a falafel stand!' And people are like, 'Eh. Weirdo.'"

Leto claims she doesn't send many late-night texts of her own anymore because she gets up at six every morning, "so nervous" that something might have happened overnight. Telling us she still "lives poorly," she admitted she recently got an apartment of her own in Brooklyn. "I bought furniture, and I'm an adult," she added. But of dating in New York, Leto lamented: "Everyone wants something from you."

What she wanted from me, at least half-seriously, was less attention. At one point, she pretended to have stolen my tape recorder so that I couldn't report on her any further. And when I asked too many questions, she said: "This is going to seem like navel-gazing for myself. No navel-gazing allowed!" But she's just so good at all this, I informed her, as at least half the men at the party tracked her across the room. On cue, with a seemingly legitimate confusion, she asked, "Good at what?"

(Editor’s note: Curtis Smolar is a partner at Ropers Majeski Kohn & Bentley. He submitted this column to VentureBeat.)

A reader asks: My business is in an industry where sales people and software engineers are often recruited by competitors.  How can I protect my company from being raided?

Answer: Employers use what are called restrictive covenants to protect trade secrets and prevent employees from unfairly stealing clients and/or information.  Courts heavily scrutinize these covenants so it is imperative to have a seasoned attorney assist you with writing one that will be enforceable under the laws of the state where your company is located. (Just missing a few words can create tremendous grief for an employer.)

There are a variety of these available, but let’s look at the most common:

Non-disclosure agreeements: Non-disclosure agreements (“NDAs”) are one of the most effective and commonly used solutions to this problem.  An NDA protects information that is a trade secret – data that has economic value (actual or potential) due to its exclusivity and is something you’re making efforts to keep secret.

Taking trade secrets without the owner’s consent is called misappropriation and if an employee misappropriates a trade secret, a company has the right to recover:

  • Actual damages it suffers from the theft

  • Repayment of the money made by the employee (or his new employer) as a result of the trade secret theft

  • Injunctions requiring the return of the stolen property

  • Attorney’s fees

To ensure the full protection of an NDA, you’ll need to require the employee to sign a confidentiality agreement when they come on board that defines the scope of information your company is trying to protect.  This can be anything from a company’s secret sauce to pricing, lists and business processes.

Additionally, the NDA should contain a proprietary inventions assignment agreement (PIAA), which ensures that all work products created by the employee belong to the company and not to the employee – and the employee has no right to take them when he or she leaves the company.  This can include everything from software programs to customer lists to website designs to pricing.

Covenants not to compete – Better known as non-compete agreements, the enforceability of these varies dramatically from state to state.  In the states in which they are enforceable, like New York or Massachusetts, they can be very powerful tools.  In other states, like California, they are generally prohibited.

California specifically has a statute stating that restrictive covenants not to compete are presumed invalid unless specific circumstances apply.  For example, if the owner of a company sells their business, a non-compete may be enforceable against him or her in California.

For the states where these are enforceable, there are still some restrictions based on the duration of the agreement, geographical location and the breadth of activity prohibited.

Additionally, in many cases it doesn’t matter where the agreement was entered into or what the laws are there. If the employee moves to another state, either during or after employment, things can become muddled. So, it’s best to use non-competes with great caution. They may not be as effective as you initially think.

Non-solicitation – There are basically two kinds of non-solicitation agreements – non solicitation of employees and non-solicitation of clients.

Non-solicitation of employees is generally enforceable in most states, but a non-solicitation of clients may be considered an unfair restraint on trade.  The exception in those situations is if the non-solicitation agreement is necessary to protect trade secrets.

Non-solicitation agreements are generally less onerous then covenants not to compete and typically more enforceable.

I thought I'd update my previous article about Genuine Ways to Make Money Online since I'm a little further down the track with it all.

I've given up all writing/content producing sites except Helium and AC, for the simple reason that although Helium can be tricky to navigate and its rating system rather arcane, it does pay us foreigners an upfront free plus money per thousand page views plus a share of their daily revenue. You need to earn $25 before they pay you out. Associated Content is now getting hits nicely and making me a few dollars.

Review Stream pay a reliable 50c - $2 per review of anything you like, by paypal.

I'm still flirting with Amazon Mechanical Turk a little, because it wasn't hard to make $80 and OK, those dollars only work at amazon.com and shipping anything here from there is freaking expensive - you can't order directly from Amazon, but many of their merchants and affiliates will ship internationally. I had fun ordering a book and a cd and a dvd - all of which are impossible to get here and I'll let you know when and if they arrive and what the customs charges are.

The one daily moneymaking routine I have, is posting in 3 forums that pay. myLot pays f-all, to be honest - I have just over a dollar there and they pay out at $10. their referral sceme only works if the person you refer is active - the other 2 forums I use, it'd benefit me even if someone signed up and never went back again. The good thing about that place though, is that there are a lot of people using it and a steady stream of info about what schemes and scams are out there. Exchange Money Place is a far quicker and more profitable option. It's run by a Lithuanian known as "Admin" and has a minimum payout of $5 which works thus: 30c when you sign up, 30c for each person you refer and 3c per post - the limit is 20 posts per day, so that's 60c per day - I reached $5.23 last night. It'll suit you if you're into money on all levels and has a rather serious atmosphere, with lots of broken English. Platinum Lounge is another one which has an arcane and ever-changing ranking system. It works on points, which you get by posting, winning mindless contests and referring people. Once you reach the first rank, they pay you $2 a week - and it goes up from there. It's a very busy forum, full of a whole load of oddness, but it has a friendly atmosphere.

Adsense is doing well, but I'm not using it to full capacity - I want my blogs to get traffic that's interested, not just a flood of clicks and keywords - if I wanted that, I'd be promising porn, immortality and millions of dollars online. Traffic Synergy is another network that offers campaigns and ads specifically for South Africans, but they didn't produce a quick result, so I stopped bothering. I've become severely dubious about Afrigator's Adgator , for the simple reason that my 5 000 hits per month blog has generated R1.20 from them in about a fortnight, and when trying to create accounts for other blogs, I get no response - and there's no facility within their structure to use the code on multiple urls or register multiple blogs to one account. Google wins again.

co.cc offer free domains (no advertising on them either) and the way to make money there is to refer others. You get 10c for each free domain you refer and more if anyone pays for their services. So far I have made ... 10c.

I have another few things to test, I'll let you know how they go.

..........and bullshit walks! Easy as that for start-ups when it comes to making up your mind about raising additional capital. Are we in a bubble? No idea but this question keeps creeping up. Those of us who went through the bubble at the turn of the century are secretly hoping we're not in another one. Those who don't remember the last one are also worried wondering whether all the old-timers are right. One way or another, it doesn't really matter.

You'll hear multiple opinions on whether to raise money at times like this. I have a very clear opinion on this. It's based on the fact that I believe the best venture backed businesses are in it for the long haul. These are companies with a real product that add value to their customers. These are businesses generating real cashflow intent on growing to significant scale. Finally, these are businesses which will use additional money to expand. Hence, here's my take on when to take money (with focus on EU based businesses):

1. Sequoia or Kleiner are on the phone. Start negotiating, get the best deal you can get and make sure to raise the money. Say what you will but Tier 1 VC's from the US will lead to a far larger exit. Specifically the top tier funds have access to management for your businesses, access to potential partners and are likely to sit on the boards of the companies that could buy you. You'd be dumb not to take money but do so wisely.

2. A tier 1 fund from Europe is interested. Find out whether there's a good fit with your businesses. I've often enough written about how to figure this out and I say to focus on the partner and not the fund when doing your due diligence. Negotiate a good deal and take the money. Tier 1 funds in Europe have learned to add value, have significantly better networks nowadays and will most likely get you bought by a US based business.

2.5. A tier 1 fund from your home country calls up. I've labeled this 2.5 because Tier 1 funds in Europe tend to only differentiate themselves based on where they are located. The rest is mostly the same. The benefit of a tier 1 locally invested in your business is the proximity. It's in your interest. You want them closer than further. If the terms are right and you have offers from abroad and locally, I'd sway towards local but the vibe has to be right. You won't be necessarily doing anything wrong taking money from a London VC verses a German VC when you are in Germany. The London VC may even be around more than the German VC. This all depends on the partner.

3. A tier 2 fund from the US calls up. Ask yourself first why they found you? Go ahead and ask. Further, research the fund and find out what they've done in the past. Have they invested in Europe before? Are they only looking to Europe because their dealflow in the US sucks? Think twice about whether they will invest the necessary time to be in Europe and invested in your business. If the deal terms are good and you are comfortable with the partner doing the deal, take the money. They can still be helpful in accessing US buyers. They are highly unlikely to open as many doors as Kleiner or Sequoia but they definitely know more people in the US than many European partners. Plus make sure you want to go to the US. They will probably eventually ask you to move the company there.

4.  A tier 2 fund from outside your home region in the EU finds you. Ask yourself how the hell they found you. More importantly, if you found them, ask yourself why the Tier 1 funds from your local region aren't interested in what you are doing. Say what you will but a UK based fund prefers to invest first in the UK and then rest of Europe. A German fund in Germany and then rest of Europe, etc. Although valuations are good and the power is in your hands to some extent think twice. There are times when taking money could be detrimental to the health of your business (as well as to your equity stake). It's nice to get a higher valuation and some extra cash but make sure it doesn't ultimately cost you more than you think.

5. A tier 2 fund from your local region calls up. Again, ask yourself first why the tier 1 funds aren't interested. Don't underestimate the value of many tier 2 funds though. Maybe they aren't the best known name in the market. At the same time, maybe they are striving to become a better fund. Maybe the number two in the market will work harder than the number one for you. This may be in your interest. Maybe! Do your homework and if you are comfortable with terms, take the money. Be far more diligent in this case though. Think longer and harder about whether you really can do more with the money now or prefer to hold out a bit.

6. Some tier 3 fund you've never heard of and can't find out much about approaches you. Be really careful. There are lots of people in this business who sure won't be around in a couple years. Money from these guys can be a nightmare. At the same time, maybe your business is the nightmare and you couldn't raise money at any other time. One way or another, things aren't going right one way or another. If you need the money to survive and know you'll never get more down the road, do everything you can to raise cash now. Maybe you've just been approached by the future Kleiner or Sequoia of Europe. Maybe not.....but money talks and bullshit walks!

You'll notice a general trend from 1. through 6. above. Take the money! If you can get good terms, know how to put the money you raise to work for growth and like the partner from the funds approaching you, go for it. The getting is good right now. As a VC I'm worried about valuations and bursting bubbles, etc. but as an entrepreneur you should be optimizing for you business. Money is always good. Ignore all the crap about having too much money and being negatively swayed by this. In this post I am defaulting to the fact that I think you are a smart entrepreneur. You aren't going to raise money to get that Porsche as a company car. You're going to grow your business and become amazing. Some will say I am wrong but I'd prefer to have the cash in the bank and worry about being wrong later.

..........and bullshit walks!

Before you get into making money online, there are a few things you need to do in order to be prepared.

1.) Prepare to be in this for the long run!

Making money online takes more time than you think. You can't just hop on the computer and expect to get $100 in the mail the next day. You

can make $100 with GPT sites, but you'll end up spending $88 while you do it. There's always a catch- no matter what people say. So, make sure you plan out some time to fully dedicate yourself to making money.

2.) Never give out too much information.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't enter your real name. Avoid entering your actual address, phone number, and email. Instead, use an email address from email.bugmenot.com. It's free and extremely simple. You don't even need a password. Also, instead of using your phone number, get a Brring.com redirection service so you can make money while these internet services try to contact you. You'll get a dollar each time they try to call you. It works even if the company is a scam. Lastly, just make up a fake address. If companies want to send you money via check, you should always be able to change you address before cashing out.

3.) Use something to track your earning.

Whether it's a notebook, blog, or Microsoft Word document, you should always keep track of your online earnings.

4.) Don't spend any money!

I say this because before you know it, you would have spent more money than you earned online. Don't even put money into your PayPal account! But if you must, limit yourself. Deposit $10 each month into PayPal. Don't get carried away.

5.) Create an online desktop.

This is my favorite part (besides making the actual money!). I recommend mygoya.com as on online desktop. It makes it easier to track all of your online tools. And plus, if you're not always on the same computer, this allows you to store everything online instead of on a flash drive.

Now that you are prepared to make money online, you can get started!

Well looks to me that everyone is complaining? Who wants to join me and fix this mess? How can a Nation rise with one-MAN? What you need to do is think tank with the right group.

Its going to take more public meetings A.S.A.P Topics, WATER, CLEAN FOODS, HEALTH, EDUCATION.

Solve Water crisis, aka miss managed. Next once you have stopped the water issues we would only agree to move forward since you stopped the use of chemicals in our soil that lead to contamination .

Impacts of chemicals in our soil are, soil contamination, and then rain run off into the water supply, the produce is plumped with all sorts of toXic chemicals that are dangerous according to hazmat the EPA, FDA, USDA, scientist. Governments, Universities, authorities, professors, you and your neighbors. You don’t listen well do you? So now that you stopped the use of toxic additives you can Grow in a lets just call it a more ORGANIC way. Now that America eats clean energy-foods and guess what? its local, because back when America thrived we had tons of Farmers and yes they all grew what we call today ORGANIC.

The out come will be healthy people! Cheap Health coverage and the best of modern Medical care. The health defecates will dwindle and so will cancer obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and Americans will not be zombies. The point is Everything’s going to be just fine no worries you see as you were sleeping, living it up? not worrying about it because you figured the Government had everything under control and you don’t read about who you vote for anyways, also they were under skilled over pressured over ruled and under worked, in the mean time some of us have been working on solutions :) and guess what we got them LOL. Relax go back to sleep we got you covered. For all you pharmaceutical Zombies hooked on what should of been a temporary solution to depression or maybe to an injury or something that led you to get permanent disability just to collect, Social security, Aid, because the lobby guys wanted to make the Government pay for commissions to the science community but even that was twisted. All those industrial Farmers on welfare are not farmers because a farmer wouldn’t use poison in his crops and his ethics are of what our founders of food has held every since the garden of Eden. Business suits will pour major chemicals down them VINES we drink called wine and it simply transfers the toxins into our VEINS (say cheers anyone). (just keep in mind wall street is about bottom-line)The subsidies in farming are causing disruption in many reasons its long so bare with me on just a few. Farm subsidies are ok if only an Organic farmer received it and should be. The Organic industry is on life support because if we no longer have them we no longer have food (the same folks that dropped the ball says .05% of farmland in the USA is organic, “shocking“). Farm subsidies are Currently given to massive scale farmers and because they grow using so many chemicals it cuts out labor and because fuel is the new donkey it replaces man so the false concept of cost for our strongest resource is under valued and organic produce will less likely be to compete in price but holds unprecedented non appreciation. Look at it from another point of view kind of like a sustainable strategies. If our Nation thinks its going to rely on genetic modified and processed food distributors, manufactures, and artificial favorers’ including false vitamins that only stimulate the body into believing it had the real thing thus altering your hormones and results in chemical imbalance, we can only imagine the effects it will have when wall street collapse the Government, the monetary and what happens when fuel goes up or Monsanto raises seed prices and because that will happen look forward they will lobby to tax and permit and you will be sues if you re-seed with-out paying for your 2nd gen seed? We really don’t believe Giant Agriculture will survive, no one to bail it out. (strategies) With out subsidies the Un-ethical farmer can not afford Agri-chems. Mexico has lost their workers because they heard America has a huge Farming industries so they hurried to do what they do best work the fields but when they arrived they see big machines that need no helping hands. Farm subsidies have crushed the Mexican Farm industries

Farm subsidies are causing border control issues because so many jobs were lost from the free trade agreement but it wasn’t fair because the American Government gave big tax dollars to fund farmers that grew major corn and other commodities (since then methane gas has been a major issue high corn syrup replaced Haiti’s Global sugar Cain trade). lets clear this up we can all agree nothing wronged if your Nation invest into Agriculture but do it right and with ETHICS. Exclude the use of any chemical or synthetic, inert, and it will be a GREAT program achieved . The free trade agreement would be more competitive and Mexican workers wont want to cross the border because the real truth is they like it in Mexico they are mostly family orientated people China’s economy is booming I don’t see many Americans running to China but let America bleed and you‘ll see. Here’s a CRISIS about to happen and it takes an EXPERT to figure this one out, are you ready? Ok now when Fuel price sores like it did in Bolivia, Pakistan, Japan, and many other Nation States, we will only have Organic Farmers and localization because the truth is our life is rapidly becoming degenerative. Life is water and water is life clean water is what you damaged Generation NOW is fixing your mess and will place your life style on hold because they want to breath fresh air in 5years, they want no defecate they want clean water and they don’t have the time to read all the laws hoops and addendum’s of past lawmakers and policy, they are generation instant gratification with now results and its causing major confusion frustrations and wrongful acts towards anyone that maybe or possibly seemingly the one in the way of social justice. Farm subsidies ruin health from all the toxic inputs, Ruined health means divide the cost of health defecate due to linkage to subsidy, link water contamination to this, link water shortage to this, link Fracking to L.A having less water coming in from Colorado river, link fracking in that zone and how much water it destroyed and is Paris NEXT 40miles S/W or N/E? What we have is a case of the finger pointing the lazy the un-ethics, and the ignorant. A polar shift is coming and most folks will not like it because the Government is not as savvy as the free market. Not enough Americans seem to care? Most of you are the same complainers that stood on the sidelines and watched it unfold. You were scared of taking action and now look, your screw ups are frustrating young adults and the only thing they will do is take action they don’t understand complex wording and slivered truth of distortion, plain and simple they are emotional and confused along with many Americans and if you weren’t paying attention the world.

P.s when poison farming can-not produced because lack of oil hopefully we will have enough ORGANIC FARMERS left. Hopefully our Nation will invest into Small Sustainable business and agriculture along with retro-fitting every building in the Americas before the money is gone. At that point a couple things will happen job creation, and our Power struggles will be lifted. Don’t wait join me now . Once you add subsidy money and health impacts Organic cost less, its sustainable and its health coverage. People its time to Sue Monsanto in a class action law suit for modification of our produce its time to sue the FDA its time to sue the USDA they are the ones that dropped the ball and they need to be fired. Simply paying for a chemical, spray permit dose not make it ok. Its your country its our PLANET do the right thing! Join your Nation Help rebuild it we will make it stronger than EVER!

If it's a foreclosure you're looking for look no further than Michigan. With the sixth highest rate of foreclosure in the country, there are plenty to choose from. But buyer beware, if you're looking to foreclosures as investment property keep in mind that Michigan also has an average unemployment rate of approximately ten percent. This means several things if you're an investor. Unemployed people typically have difficulty paying rent and unemployed people are leaving the state in droves in search of employment in a better job market than what the state of Michigan has to offer at this time. This may make rental property a bit risky.

A good place to start looking for foreclosed home listings in Michigan is at:
http://www.freeforeclosuredatabase.com
This is one of the few free search sites for foreclosures in Michigan. There is no signing up for anything to access the listings. You can search by city easily. Included within the listings are the actual address of the property and what the current asking price is. Most have photos included with the listings and typically have the agents email address also. The only thing this site is missing is information on the home such as size and amenities included.

The next site is somewhat similar to the first. In order to view details on the homes or obtain an address you will need to sign up for the free seven day trial first.

This site gives you the city and street it is located on, how many bedrooms and baths and the list price without signing up for the free trial.

At www.foreclosuredatabank.com you can obtain a bit more information than the previous one, yet it too requires a seven day free trial to obtain the exact address and agent information. What is helpful about this site is it not only contains limited information about the home such as number of bedrooms and baths, it also includes the lot size and an estimated monthly payment based on a 30 year fixed rate of 5.9% with ten percent down. With this information you can better determine your price range to search in.

At http://www.nationalrelocation.com you can also search local foreclosure listings by city. Typically the properties listed on this site are up for auction and include the date of when the auction is to take place. One positive about this site is that they list through their own real estate agents. Once you locate the property your interested in you can locate the agent nearest to the property by clicking on the agent tab at the top of the page. Once at the agent's page you can contact them by phone or email. You can also view their website which includes a free list of their foreclosures. With each listing is an aerial photo of the property, the location of the property minus the address, number of beds and baths, square feet, year built and the auction date.

Good luck with your foreclosure search. You shouldn't have a hard time finding one in Michigan.
